Image ID 22-185 Title Washington Monument, The First Date 1952 Description The Washington Monument, located four miles east of the town of Boonsboro, in Washington County, Maryland, United States, honors the "Father of Our Country," George Washington. The monument sits near the summit of South Mountain's Monument Knob (1,539 feet ). The 34-foot-tall tower is protected within Washington Monument State Park. While the City of Baltimore was raising funds to build the huge monument on Charles Street, Boonsboro was thinking about one. The monument in Baltimore was started in 1809 and finished in 1829. On July 4th, 1927, the citizens of Boonsboro completed this monument in one day and thus became the possessors of the first monument in the United States to be completed in honor of George Washington. The structure fell to pieces about the time of the Civil War but it was restored in 1936. It is to be found in Washinton Monument State Park above Zittletown, which was named after a family that settled there. The area was much involved in the Civil War campaigns and the spot used as a Union signal tower.
