Image ID 15-040 Title Over the Rocks-Bay Date 1952 Description A fleet of dredger boats is working the oyster beds of the Chesapeake Bay. This area is a submerged island at the mouth of the Choptank River. Clarence and Eva is the bugeye in left foreground. A fleet of Bay craft dredge for oysters, the most valuable of all the Chespaeake's seafood products. In 1964, the last year in which complete figures are available, the Bay yielded 1,340,000 bushels of oysters, Vlued at more than $4,500,000. The same year watermen harvested more than 25,000,000 pounds of crabs, worth almost $3,000,000. The total seafood harvest was 70,000,000 ,pounds with a value of $12,000,000. About 9,000 Marylanders harvest seafood Annually.
