Image ID 14-192 Title Purse Netters Date 1954 Description A bunker boat(the big one) comes up to purse boats that have closed a net about a school of menhaden in the bay near Cape Charles. In point of numbers caught, the lowly menhaden is America's top fish. Yearly, 1,500,000,000 or more are taken along our east coast alone-to become fertilizer, or oil that will go into soap, paint, linoleum and other things. The chief Eastern fishing port is Reedville, Virginia and it is boats from there that most of these pictures show. They are working in the lower bay when photogrpahed, but by this time will be down off North Carolina.
