Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country
A. A. Bodine
Edited by Jennifer Bodine
Photographing the United States was a big thrill,
but I always get a bigger thrill when I make a picture
of a fleet of dredge boats moving over an oyster bed on a
beautiful autumn day.
A. Aubrey Bodine
Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country is by and
about A. Aubrey Bodine: Baltimore pictorialist, Sunpapers
photographer, a Maryland treasure, and one of the greatest
photographers of his time. Bodine's
photographs chronicled nearly every aspect of
Maryland life on the pages of the Baltimore
Sunpapers from 1924 to 1970. This new
volume, containing 286 digitally restored
photographs, is divided into five Maryland
areas: Baltimore and surrounds, Chesapeake
Bay, Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and
Annapolis, and Western Maryland.
Bodine's first four books,
My Maryland,
Chesapeake Bay and Tidewater,
Face of Maryland,
Face of Virginia,
published between 1952 and 1970, were immensely
popular. For Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country,
editor Jennifer Bodine engaged specific essays
and descriptions from her father's books, and
selected the images that were Bodine's personal
favorites or award winners. The Baltimore
pictorialist won over a thousand awards in
national and international competitions.
To fully capture the essence of A. Aubrey
Bodine, photographs have also been gathered
from his personal collection and the Baltimore
Sun's extensive archive.
